Nine Men's Morris

Nine pieces, three phases, one mill at a time

Head to headBoardStrategy

Older than chess and shorter than draughts. Place nine pieces, then move them, and if you are reduced to three you may fly anywhere on the board.

How to play

Goal. Reduce your opponent to two pieces, or leave them with no legal move.

  • First, place your nine pieces one per turn. Then move a piece along a line to the next empty point. You have 45 seconds a turn.
  • Three of your pieces in a line is a mill, and a mill takes one of your opponent's pieces off the board — but a piece in a mill of their own is protected unless all of theirs are.
  • With only three pieces left you may move to any empty point, not just the next one.

Match rules

  • Every match you stake money on is played against another person — a random opponent, or a friend you invite with a code. You each put in the same stake: E5, E10 or E20.
  • The winner receives 90% of the pot, and the platform keeps 10%. A draw returns both stakes in full.
  • You have a set time for each turn. Miss it and play passes to your opponent; miss three turns and you lose the match.
  • Once a match has started, there is no going back. Give up, or leave, at any point — even before the first move — and the match is your opponent's, with your score at that moment recorded. Leave while you are still waiting for an opponent and your stake comes back.
  • If your connection drops, your seat is held for 30 seconds and the page reconnects by itself. Your turn clock keeps running while you are away. Not back in time, and it counts as leaving.
  • Practice is free, up to 10 times a day in each game, with nothing staked.
  • Our servers run or check every game to prevent cheating.
  • Winnings land in your Crazy8s wallet, and you can move them to your mobile money whenever you want.
